The ITeam - News & Opinion: "But I don't wanna upgrade!"
I was shopping the other day and heard a frustrated mom telling Little Timmy that it was time to leave the toy aisle and go home. To which Little Timmy screeched back, "But I don't wanna go! I don't wanna, I don't wanna, I don't wanna!!!"

Little Timmy got more time in the toy aisle. Way to go mom.

The episode reminded me (sort of) of the relationship between Momma Microsoft and her "children" ... otherwise known as customers. Microsoft says it's time to upgrade from trusty old Windows XP to shiny new (and profitable) Windows 7. And for the most part, the operating system consumer market's initial response echoed that of Little Timmy facing extraction from the toy aisle ... "But I don't wanna upgrade!"

Like Timmy's mom granting her little angel more time with the toys, Microsoft gave us extra time with XP. But eventually Timmy had to leave the toy aisle, and likewise we have to leave Windows XP. We have no choice ... momma says it's time to go.

It's probably for the best. The store's closing and we won't be allowed to stay behind. It's for our own good.

So there we have it. We're forced kicking and screaming to adopt a new operating system to replace our beloved Windows XP. Looking back, it's pretty amazing really ... we've spent years complaining about XP and how crappy it was. Yet now that it's being taken away from us we look back fondly, yearning for "the good old days" we spent with Windows XP. Let's be real ... the "good old days" were never as good as we tell ourselves they were. But, hey, any rationalization in a storm, right?

To be honest, given a chance Windows 7 is pretty cool. Once you figure our where all the stuff is you're used to fiddling with it actually makes much more sense from an organizational point of view than XP ever did. It's stable, it's reasonably quick, it opens up more computer resources (can you say 12gb of memory?) and it's pretty to look at, too. And it works.

So, what's not to like? It's new, that's what's not to like. Change is not fun and we don't want to go through it, no matter how much better off we'll be. And better of we will be ... trust me.

Windows 7 is the future and it's where we all need to be ... even if we don't think we want to be there. Get used to it Timmy ... momma's putting her foot down. - Mike
